What is Private Bed Finder?
Private Bed Finder is a service which finds private doctors and private
hospital beds for insured patients in public hospital emergency departments.
Its primary role is to help relieve the pressure in the public health
sector by organising private specialists and private hospitals to care
for patients who have either private health insurance or insurance provided
by the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA). It is a free service for both the
referring public hospital and the patient.
Who is involved in Private Bed Finder?
Private Bed Finder has been set up by medical and nursing
personnel who have extensive experience in both the public and private
acute healthcare sectors.
How does it work?
Using Private Bed Finder is simple for the referring doctor or hospital.
- A patient with insurance (private or DVA) who presents to the Emergency
Department may request to be transferred to the private sector.
- Instead of taking on the often considerable administrative overhead of arranging
a private transfer, the emergency department doctor (or representative) can simply
call Private Bed Finder (1300 909 201).
- The doctor will speak directly to a Private Bed Finder Registered Nurse,
who will obtain and record a brief patient history, including the type of specialist required.
- At this point, Private Bed Finder does the rest. The Registered Nurse will
arrange referral for the patient to an appropriate specialist and
private hospital.
- Once details are finalised, the referring doctor
will be contacted with details of the transfer. The referring
institution will need to organise suitable transport to finalise the
transfer.

Private Bed Finder is available from 9.00am to 7.00pm, 7 days a week.
